Turkey’s Breakfast: When One Meal Becomes a Feast
Breakfast is supposed to be the simple meal of the day, right? A little bread, perhaps some eggs, a cup of coffee, and you’re ready to face the world.
Not in Turkey.
In Turkey, breakfast can become an event. A very delicious, very crowded event where the table slowly disappears beneath plates of bread, cheese, olives, eggs, vegetables, jams, honey, butter, and enough tea to make you wonder whether you’re attending breakfast or a small food festival.
Known as kahvaltı, Turkish breakfast is famous for its incredible variety. Instead of choosing one thing to eat, you get a little bit of everything. There are different kinds of cheese, green and black olives, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, boiled or fried eggs, sucuk (spiced sausage), honey, jams, butter, and plenty of fresh bread for scooping, dipping, spreading, and generally making sure nothing delicious is left behind.
And Then There Is the Tea
Turkish tea is practically the unofficial supervisor of the breakfast table. It arrives in small, elegant glasses and seems to have an unlimited supply. Finish one? Another appears. Finish that one? Congratulations, you have unlocked another glass.
One of the joys of Turkish breakfast is the social experience. Meals are often enjoyed slowly with family or friends, with everyone reaching across the table to try something different. Nobody seems particularly interested in rushing through it.
There is also a wonderful absence of the idea that breakfast has to be boring. Sweet and savory foods happily share the same table. You can spread honey on bread, grab an olive, eat some cheese, and then immediately return to your eggs as if this combination makes perfect sense.
And honestly, it does.
Turkish breakfast turns the first meal of the day into an opportunity to relax, talk, share food, and enjoy good company. It reminds us that breakfast doesn’t necessarily have to be something you eat while running out the door.
Sometimes, breakfast deserves the whole morning.
So next time someone suggests that toast is enough for breakfast, just remember Turkey.
Toast has entered the chat and Turkey brought 17 side dishes.
