Christmas in July? Meet the Santas Who Celebrate in Summer
Who says you have to wait until December to hear Christmas songs, see Santa Claus, or argue about whether you’ve been naughty or nice? In Denmark, some people bring Christmas cheer to the middle of summer and they do it wearing thick red suits, fluffy white beards, and hats that probably make them sweat more than a snowman in a sauna!
Welcome to the World Santa Claus Congress, one of the most unusual and cheerful summer gatherings on the planet.
Ho, Ho, How Is It So Hot?
Every summer, Santa performers, elves, and Christmas enthusiasts gather in Denmark for the World Santa Claus Congress. The event is traditionally held in July at Dyrehavsbakken, an amusement park north of Copenhagen, where Christmas arrives months before anyone has finished eating their summer ice cream.
The congress was created in 1957 by Danish entertainer Professor Tribini. His playful idea brought together people who love playing Santa Claus and wanted to celebrate the festive season outside the usual winter schedule.
Instead of snow-covered streets and freezing temperatures, participants enjoy summer weather, amusement park rides, and plenty of Christmas-themed fun. Imagine seeing dozens of Santas walking around in the sunshine while ordinary tourists wonder whether December has somehow arrived early!
What Do Santas Do in July?
The congress is much more than a gathering of people with impressive beards. Participants take part in parades, performances, games, meetings, and other festive activities. They exchange ideas about their work, share traditions, and celebrate the joy of entertaining children and families.
There are also playful discussions about Santa-related matters, including Christmas customs and how to spread holiday cheer around the world.
And yes, there are plenty of opportunities for photographs. If you thought seeing one Santa at a shopping mall was exciting, imagine standing in front of an entire parade of them!
One important question remains: how do they keep those famous red costumes comfortable in summer? We can only hope someone thought to bring a fan, plenty of water, and a very understanding laundry service.
Why Celebrate Christmas Twice?
For many people, Christmas represents kindness, generosity, family, and happiness. The World Santa Claus Congress celebrates those ideas without waiting for a particular date on the calendar.
It also brings together people from different countries who share a love of Christmas traditions and entertaining others.
After all, there’s no law saying you can only be cheerful in December. Sometimes, a little extra Christmas magic is exactly what a summer day needs.
The Most Wonderful Time of the Summer
The World Santa Claus Congress proves that Christmas spirit doesn’t need snow, a fireplace, or a mountain of presents.
So, if you ever visit Denmark in July and spot Santa Claus enjoying an amusement park ride, don’t panic. You haven’t lost track of time, and your calendar is probably fine.
Santa is simply on his summer vacation and apparently, even the North Pole’s busiest resident knows how to enjoy a little sunshine!
